I was blessed to be part of the reunion in Willimsburg. I shared with some other wonderful veterans memories of that tour at Wildwood Station more 45 years ago...WOW! Kudos to Jack Paugh for a great job in putting together this reunion, and taking the lead in putting together the association. GREAT JOB, Jack! From the comments I have seen, most of the folks who attended the 2004 reunion will be there in 2006. I hope that the good Lord enables all of us to enjoy continued good health so we can be there. To those who were not there, YOU MISSED IT! We hope to see you in 2006. Sadly, the Memorial Honor Roll grow over the next two years, and we will have folks we wanted to see who will not make it. As the Wildwood Station reunion group gets formally organized, let's support Jack Paugh, and the other folks who serve us as elected and appointed officers.

I enjoyed the Wildwood Station reunion at Williamsburg very much. It was great to see guys I worked with on trick 3: Charlie Atkinson, Preston Havens, Joe Gerlach, Burt Spalding, Jackie Paugh, And Don Underwood. I also enjoyed seeing others that served at WWs during 1957-59. Many thanks to Jackie Paugh for his hard work organizing the reunion. I wish my old work partner Lloyd Ratcliff could have been there too. Lets all remember him in his time of trouble. I will have to thank my happy hour friends at the Hoyt Lakes VFW that talked me into going. Ron Heruth

Our extended family (13 of us) just returned from a vacation to Kenai and trying to check out Wildwood Station. So many changes! They even blasted the huge rock on the beach. We used to gather driftwood and roast marshmallows and hotdogs but no fires allowed anymore. We were able to find a few landmarks. It was really great and want to thank our 4 kids for making this possible.

Ok, What I mean about the green door is what Mike Flanigan was referring to in his post on this site about building 100. I'm sick of hearing rumors that it was a building where people who were dieing of tuberculosis were kept and thier bodys incinerated. alot of kids in the town think that.

Hello, my name is Mitsy and I am a resident of Kenai Alaska. I am 22 years old, and have never been in the service. The reason I am righting here is because I have been trying to find some information on wildwood station and especially building 100. I have been having trouble finding the history on building 100 or what actually went on in there. What was really going on behind the green door. Everyone here in Kenai believes that it was a small fish plant, cannery what ever. If any of you could give me an idea of what the purpose of building 100 was, that would be great. I helped turn out the lights at Fairbanks. Cleaned out and packed Equipt.Arived in Kenai just before Christmas in 53. Returned to states in Jan. 54. Just long enough to get to the Drift Inn and The Bear's Den. I can't remember who the First Sgt. was at that time but I do remember he made the statement "I'me going to teach those boys from Fairbanks how to drink." We went out Christmas Eve. Tim Bachuber had CQ. He could not get him up for Dinner and I don't remember if he made supper. BUT THE BOYS FROM FAIRBANKS MADE BOTH MEALS.

Four of us "Cheechacos" purchased an old green Hudson from a group of guys who were being discharged. Waw a lot of AK in that machine and we were lucky to have wheels as we most likely would have become alcoholics due to the confinement. Back then you could also check out boats and motors on post so we fished constantly. I remember my first time out after Kings on a local river with a couple of guys who had been there awhile. Polaroid glasses had just hit the market and one of the guys had a pair and let me try them out. I'll never forget the thrill of seeing those monsters fighting for position under water as they headed up stream. I managed to latch on to a 30 pounder and after a few trips and slips I managed to beach it. To keep my sanity, I also ran the projector at the base theater. Many's the time I feared for my life when the film broke! Other Sp4's in our select group were Tom Butler, Richard Preston, Gil Manzo, Ray Cox and Bill Doane.

Nice to see this site. Edgar "boots" Sears on page 15 is the only person that I remember. I went to Wildwood on the troop ship Fredrick Funstion and 4 of us drove home via the Alcan Highway in a 1951 Plymouth. The only trouble we had was slideing off the road once and the breaker arm on the points broke. I visited Edgar Sears at his home in Georga in the 1980's. I drove from my home in Ky. to Wildwood in 2002. What a change in the area! I was a power equipment spec. while in the ASA. Thanks.

What a wonderful time I had at Wildwood. Worked Building 100 as a Facilities Controller for the STARCOM network. I fished, fished and fished some more. Shot many Moose in the antenna fields and gave to the needy in Kenai. Kenai - most of the buildings were bars with dirt floors. The airport was still dirt and flew on many DC-3's in and out of Kenai. The NCO Club was in the basement of the gym - boy did we party. A great experience. Thanking you for this guestbook - I'll have to dust off the slides so I can remember a last frontier

A great site, brings back memories from 50 years ago. Capt. James Blackburn was post property officer and Capt. Merle Moore was motor officer-worked with both of them. M/Sgt Parker a grizzly old 1st Sgt. would say he used more ink signing GI paychecks than most people used in a lifetime.

Just a little note to express my sorrow at the passing of so many friends recently...Mike Flanigan, et al. On a lighter side, I remember riding from Anchorage to Kenai with Bob Holt and his Plymouth. Leo Coonradt was with me and of course, Bob. Bob was driving on glare ice at 105 MPH (really). I'm sure that wherever that Plymouth is now, our fingerprints are still firmly embedded in the dashboard. True story! Russ

I was a dependent at WWS. I remember seeing moose in the backyard, playing "Kiddie" Bingo at the NCO club on Sunday afternoons, free cartoons at the Theatre on Saturday mornings and hearing Reville everyday at 5PM. And don't forget the over anxious dentist at the dispensary who called in all of the dependents for "checkups." I left WWS with 13 fillings. During the nice weather months there were military funded picnics for all of the families on the holidays [Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Armed Forces Day]. Would like to locate Airman Dave Horton who was one of my Boy Scout leaders.

Really glad that I found the site. Especially liked the photos of familiar faces. If someone is interested, I also have pictures taken at Wildwood. Have ones of Ralph Wheaton, Joe Miller, Tony Palladino, Jack Alley, Ed Wantuch, Humrickhouse, Burnham, Bob Holding, Don Wulf and others. I do remember the moose riding incident although did not witness it so cannot vouch for its authinticity. After leaving Wildwood I went to Shemya then to NSA, Arlington Hall, Venthill Farms then back to Ft. Meade. I have to say that my memories of the ASA are good and I enjoy visiting the other web sites also.

Enjoyed my stay, lots of basketball and trips to the drug store in Kenai for social life. Was back in 2000, boy how things have changed.

I was among the first at wildwood station in Nov 1953, at that time there was nothing there,NOTHING. The best times were spent at the driftwood inn, playing the left handers game and drinking. Also going to dinner at Mrs Millers restaurant and having a good steak dinner and butterscotch pie was a treat. I would like to hear from alot of my buddies with whom I spent time in Alaska with, but being my age at 70,who's left!!!!Those were the days.

I have knowledge of one paint can incident that happened, I believe, in 57. During an off duty night, seven or eight of us went to the NCO Club to celebrate a bithday. We were having fun and got a little too loud. We were ask to leave. When we got to the barrack, we ran into another group who had been out on the town.. We went up the stairs first. They were a little slower coming up. There was a 5 gallon paint can setting on the top step. As we walked down the hall, we heard a very loud noise. We never looked back. We knew what it was. The next day we were summoned to the CO's Office. We had been identified as prime suspects due to the NCO incident. The Kicker, I believe, confessed. I have forgotten his name but he was young guy from New York. We were all on the same Trick. If you recall, he spent a lot of his off duty time with paint remover, wire brush, and rag cleaning it up. Our NCO privileges were canceled.

I came to Wildwood in Oct 1958. I worked out of the plumbing and heating shop with civil service workers. I really injoyed my duty and extended twice and took my discharge at Fort Richardson. I stayed in Kenai and still here after 44 years. I bought a 1950 Buick when I was at Wildwood and made many trips to Seward. I remember some G I's from Fort Rich caused some problems at Seward and Wildwood got the blame. I remember Capt. Hackett went to bat for us as he was our provest marshall and got it straightened out. I drove cab for Northway cab which was Phil Wilso while I was in the army. I ended up marrying his daughter Kathy and we had 4 children whom all live in Las Vegas. Kathy and I still live in Kenai and I retired 2 years ago as I had 40 years in for the same company . Regards.

Are you kidding? Holtser and Dixon were legends at Wildwood Station! Their moose ride was the bravest/dumbest thing ever! I told the story many times but I don't think anyone believed me! One other thing I remember well was the 5 gallon can of paint going down the stairwell. My room was right down the hall from the crime scene. The morning of the crime, I awoke to the MP's gethering up my shoes to inspect for paint. So I sat for a half day waiting for the return of my shoes---I missed chow!

I remember meeting Ron Heruth at Ft. Devens in the fall of 1956. We were together when shipped to Ft. Gordon and were among the select few that had to get a haircut upon arrival at Gordon and a second one the same day because the 1st Sgt. did not like the first cut (he was not impressed that we were ASA). Weeks later when we shipped out to Alaska we were wearing the ASA crest on our hats and Ike Jacket flaps. Upon landing at the AFB near Ft. Lewis we came off the plane and to our surprise the airmen kept saluting us. We, of course, did the honorable thing and returned the salute; in hindsight we should have had them carry our duffel bags. I guess we were generals for almost an hour.I was on Trick 3 and later on Trick 4 and Chuck I know what went on behind the "Green Door". We had BETTER coffee! Oh, did I mention the Wildwood Echoes played for our dances twice a month, behind the Green Door.

I arrived at Port Whittier aboard the Fredrick Funston boat. It was Thanksgiving day and cold as heck. Enroute to Anchorage our train was stopped by a snow avalanche and we had to sit for hours until the tracks were cleared. I'll never forget that day!!

I still remember Alaska as being rugged and beautiful. And friendly. I probably started to walk to Kenai three or four times a month, and did the whole distance once or twice. Looking forward to seeing s few of the folks I served with there. Do not remember my Trick Number, but CWO Hendry was WO and SFC Griffiths was Trick Chief, and I think Bob Holder was the Supervisor of the 058's in the room where I worked. I like the way that this WWS group is getting things together.
